The United States has one of the best health care systems in the world - if you can afford to use it! So let's face it, the American health care system is broken and suggested fixes have ranged anywhere from adapting a prot-socialist health care system like they have in England, to simply mandating that everyone buy insurance. With the 'everyone must buy health insurance' mandate attached to a 'guarantee' of the government stepping in to help those that they deem cannot afford it, ignoring the fact that many people who technically can currently afford to buy health insurance really cannot, because real life does not always adhere to a government formula.

Into this foray has stepped Dr. David Gratzer, a physician and a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute (MI). In his controversial book, The Cure, Gratzer theorizes that all that is needed to fix the American health care system is to give good old fashion capitalism its head, and let the 'market' take care of things.

With precision and a sound argument Gratzer contends that most of the current ideas being bandied about as 'cures' are really nothing more than outmoded economic methods that have long since past their expiration date. Rather we need to take a new tack by deregulating the health care industry and allowing free market factors to dictate health care policy rather than allowing the government to dictate the tack that the markets have to take. By giving capitalism a free reign, health care costs will come down, access to health care will improve, as will quality.

In his book The Cure, Gratzer clearly outlines all that is wrong with the American health care system and how capitalism, if allowed to 'do its stuff' can fix it. Speaking with eloquence and an in-depth understanding of the problem, Gratzer puts his case across in readable and understandable prose. Even if, in the end, you find yourself disagreeing with Gratzer's theory, you cannot help but agree that he did a fine job of stating his point. As such, this book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the ongoing health care debate. It will not only give you an outstanding grasp of what the problems are, but also what the various solutions are that have been proposed - along with the solution proposed by Gratzer himself.
