    Descartes , Rene ( 1596 - 1650 )

Celebrated French mathematician, philosopher and scientist. Descartes is regarded as the father of modern scientific method and modern philosophy. He is renowned for his principle: "I think, therefore I am." He formulated a system for differentiating between mind and matter. This resulted in the philosophy of Cartesianism, which was named after him.

He wrote prolifically and the most significant of his writings include: Essais philosophiques (Philosophical Essays, 1637); Discours de la Methode (Discourse on Method, 1639); Meditationes de Prima Philosphia (Meditations on first Philosophy, 1641); and Principia philosphiae (Principles of Philosophy, 1644).
