    Lofting , Hugh ( 1886 - 1947 )

    English-born American writer. Lofting is famous as the creator of Dr. Dolittle, the adored character of children's classics who made his first appearance in 1920. Lofting's charming books of the Dr. Dolittle series are reflective of the author's creative imagination. The most memorable of these are The Story of Dr. Dolittle (1920); and Dr. Dolittle's Garden (1927). Another book of the series, The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle (1922), won the Newbery Medal for "the best children's book of the year." Lofting's other writings include The Story of Mrs. Tubbs (1923); and Tommy, Lily and Mrs. Tubbs (1934).
