About the Author
Richard Doddridge Blackmore's novel Lorna Doone remains a favorite of the reading public. He trained as a lawyer but, because of his epilepsy, worked as classics teacher until an inheritance allowed him to live in the country and run an extensive fruit garden. In his novels, Blackmore lovingly imitated both the landscape and the dialect of his beloved Devon, but his books are also notable for the unrepentant evil and violence of their villains.
