About the Author
Benito Perez Galdos was a liberal Spanish realist who wrote over 60 works. His early novels mix historical and fictional characters and are the result of documentary research.
His novels adroitly describe the lower classes and often examine the uniquely Spanish concept of quedar bien, the tendency to pretend that everything is going well, though disaster is immanent. He went blind in 1912 but continued to write and has been called the greatest Spanish novelist since Cervantes.
