    Biography

    Greek philosopher, known for his belief in Stoicism. Epictetus firmly believed in freedom and patience. He was of the view that human beings should calmly accept their fate.
    As a slave he educated himself. After receiving his freedom, he started imparting his views to others. It was due to his teachings and beliefs that he was expelled from Rome in AD 90 by the emperor Domitian. The teachings of Epictetus were collected by his pupil, Arrian in two works: the Encheiridion (Manual) and Discourses of Epictetus. The latter was in eight books of which four still exist.
