    Biography

    One of the earliest and greatest figures of Romanticism. Blake is known for his poetry especially the innovative series of lyrical and epic poems Songs of Innocence (1789) and Songs of Experience (1794).
    Blake started his career by apprenticing at an engraver and earned his living by engraving for a publisher. In 1783, his first volume of poetry was printed titled Poetical Sketches. These poems are unequaled in English poetry for their sparkle and lyric intensity.
    In 1787 he wrote the fragment of a prose fantasy An Island in the Moon. In 1788 two of his tracts, There is No Natural Religion and All Religions are One were published. Soon after came his masterpieces, Songs of Innocence and The Book of Thel (both engraved 1789), The French Revolution (1791), The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Visions of the Daughters of Albion (both engraved 1793), and Songs of Innocence and Experience (1794).
    His other major works include The Book of Urizen (1794), The Book of Los (1795), Milton: A Poem in Two Books, To Justify the Ways of God to Men (1803-1808) and The Ghost of Abel (1822).
