    William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920) was a popular American novelist, literary critic, and journalist and one of the most renowned public figures of his time. He opposed American imperialism and was a great supporter of socialism. Howells published many novels, stories, plays, and poems during his life but is best known for A Modern Instance (1882) and The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885). This resolute critic of ethnic bigotry died at the age of 83 in New York City. ;
