Fanny Burney (1752 - 1840), known as Madame d'Arblay after marriage, was an English novelist and diarist born in King's Lynn, England. She was self - educated and began writing what she called her 'scribblings' at the age of ten. As a novelist, she set the stage for such comic giants as Jane Austen and Thackeray. Burney focused on issues concerning females and on the hypocrisy of the aristocracy in her works.
