American writer, philosopher, naturalist, and transcendentalist, Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862) was born in Concord, Massachusetts. His works on philosophy and natural history are amongst his most outstanding contributions to the literary world. Thoreau professed the doctrine of non - violence that influenced such great figures as Leo Tolstoy and Martin Luther King Jr. He is also cited as an anarchist because of the views he presented in his famous Civil Disobedience.
