Gaius Julius Caesar (100 - 44 BC) was agreat Roman general, statesman and dictator who played a key role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Caesar was born into a patrician family in Rome. Famous for his conquest of Gaul (58 - 50 BC), he was also victorious the Civil War (49 BC) against Pompey at the Battle of Pharsalus. He wasregarded asan excellent orator and author of prose and wrote Commentarii de Bello Gallico and Commentarii de Bello Civili, among other works. ;
