    Biography

    Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821 - 1890) was a British explorer, linguist, writer, and student of Asian cultures. He was born in Torquay, Devon to an English army officer. Burton was raised in France, England, and Italy, where he was educated by tutors until entering Trinity College, Oxford, in 1840. Burton learned manyEuropean, Asian, and African languages. He is famous for his Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El - Medinah and Meccah (1855) and for translating The Arabian Nights (1885 - 1888). ;
