    American novelist and short story writer. Her observations and readings of Harriet Beecher Stowe?s stories of New England?s life provided the inspiration for her efforts at fiction. Her depictions of New England?s life were described as ?poetic realism? by Edward Garnett. Deephaven (1877) was her first successful book. Her works include A Country Doctor (1884), A Marsh Island (1885), A White Heron (1886), The King of Folly Island (1888), The Life of Nancy (1895), The Tory Lover.
