    Biography

    Thomas More coined the word 'utopia' in his book by that name, published in 1516.  He was a prolific author and a loving father who sought to educate his daughters as well as his sons.  More held several important government positions.  As Lord Chancelor, he had Lutherans and other heretics burned at the stake, but he himself was executed for treason in 1535 after denouncing the king's claim to be the head of the Church of England.  A devout Catholic, he was canonized as a saint in 1935. ;
