Horace Walpole (1717 - 1797), English novelist, writer, politician, architect, and youngest son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole, was born in London. He is best - known for his a Gothic romance, The Castle of Otranto (1764). He is also admired for his letters. He served the British Parliament as a member for 27 years, wrote a four - volume book, Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762 - 1771), and died at the age of 80. ;
