Old English Anglo-Saxon poet, Cynewulf was man of learning who was familiar with the religious literature of his day. He flourished in the early ninth century. He was a careful and a skilful craftsman, he used to apply principles of Latin rhetoric to achieve a clarity and orderly narrative. His famous works include: Ascension, The Fates of the Apostles, Juliana and Elene. He was one of the earliest English Christian poets.
