Maturin Murray Ballou (1820 - 1895) was a prolific journalist, editor, writer and the father of American dime novels. He was born in Boston and is best - known for his prize winning story, Rosalette; or, the Flower Girl of Paris. Ballou wrote for and published various periodicals and produced a vast array of books, including The Circassian Slave, The New Eldorado : A Summer Journey to Alaska, Biography of Rev. Hosea Ballou, History of Cuba, The Duke's Prize, The Heart's Secret, and The Sea - witch. ;
