    Biography

    American novelist and playwright, Mary Roberts is best known for her unforgettable mystery stories.
    She took up writing in 1903 and the same year her first story was published. Her first book, The Circular Staircase (1908), was an instant success. Her success was ensured with the appearance of The Man in Lower Ten (1909). Rinehart also penned a series of novels beginning with The Amazing Adventures of Letitia Carberry (1911).
    During World War I, Rinehart served as a war correspondent. She described this experience in Kings, Queens and Pawns (1915). She also wrote humorous character sketches, romances and nine plays. Most of these plays were written in collaboration with Avery Hopwood. Her autobiography, My Story, was published in 1931 and revised in 1948. At the time of her death her books had sold more than 10 million copies.
    Rinehart's major books include The State Versus Elinor Norton (1934), Swimming Pool (1951), and The Best of Tish (1955).
