    Biography

    George Meredith (1828 - 1909) was an English novelist and poet.  He was trained as a solicitor but abandoned law for journalism early on.  Meredith's novels include The Egoist and the popular Diana of the Crossways.  His poetry is remarkable for its natural imagery, and his Essay on Comedy was an important contribution to Victorian literary theory.  In addition, Meredith was influential as a reader for Chapman and Hall.  He was apparently one of Oscar Wilde's favorite novelists. ;
