Biography
George Meredith (1828 - 1909) was an English novelist and poet. Â He was trained as a solicitor but abandoned law for journalism early on. Â Meredith's novels include The Egoist and the popular Diana of the Crossways. Â His poetry is remarkable for its natural imagery, and his Essay on Comedy was an important contribution to Victorian literary theory. Â In addition, Meredith was influential as a reader for Chapman and Hall. Â He was apparently one of Oscar Wilde's favorite novelists. ;
