    Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789 - 1867) was an American novelist and was born in Massachusetts. She wrote both domestic and historical novels and is best known for her most popular work, Hope Leslie (1827), which concerns a dramatic conflict between British colonists and Native Americans. Her first novel was A New - England Tale (1822). Sedgwick also worked for a number of periodicals and produced a variety of books, such asMarried or Single? (1857), andLive and Let Live. ;
