Charlotte Lennox was successful as a writer, and her work continues to be respected by feminists and scholars. She became friends with Samuel Johnson, and both Johnson and Samuel Richardson supported her and reviewed her work. Henry Fielding also praised the novel in print. Her later books, however, failed to bring her much revenue. She and her husband finally separated in 1793, and she lived on in poverty, entirely reliant on charitable support. She died in 1804.
An excellent multitalented English novelist Charlotte Lennox is ranked among the leading literary women of eighteenth century. Her works deal with the circumstances faced by the women of her era.
