Bastiat, Claude Frederick
Biography
French economist and journalist, famed for his pro- free trade writings.
Bastiat staunchly believed in free trade and for its promotion established the Associations for Free Trade in 1846. Many of his writings including the satiric Sophismes economiques (Sophisms of Protection, 1845) were published in the society's journal, Le Libre-Echange (Free Trade). Bastiat also wrote against socialism. His major works include Propriete et loi and Protectionisme et communisme, both of which were published during 1849 and 1850.
