    Biography

    Chinese teacher, political theorist, and philosopher, one of the most distinguished figure whose ideas have had a great impact on the civilization of East Asia. He began his career by travelling and teaching a small group of partisans. His recognition as a man of learning and character soon stretched throughout the principality of Lu. Confucius condemned the lack of moral standards and discipline during the Zhou dynasty. He began to convert people back onto the ancient classics, thinking this as the only remedy to bring back their lives in order. At the age of 50, he served as a magistrate of Zhongdu (Chung-tu), and the next year as a minister of crime in the state of Lu. He brought many reforms to eradicate crime and bring justice in the state. He spent a retired life upon his return to Lu, writing treatises on the classics. Confucius? principles of philosophy were handed down through his disciples. The reliable sources of information about his work and life include Lunyu (The Analects), Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals), and SiShu (Ssu Shu; Four Books) of Confucian literature.
