Biography
Known for his mystery stories, Hume is regarded as a significant predecessor of many popular detective writers.
Hume was born in England but at the age of three, he immigrated with his family to New Zealand. He tried his hand at playwriting, however, it was through his self-published novel, The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886) that he found success and fame. It sold more than 500,000 copies. After this literary achievement, Hume returned to England in 1888. For about thirty years he continued to write detective novels. He penned more than 130 novels in his whole career.
