    Biography

    Born in the state of New York, James Kirke Paulding (1778 - 1860)was an American author of late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was also the United States Secretary of Navy, and during this tenure he enlarged the naval fleet, increased the apprenticeship program, and facilitated exploration efforts. He wrote poetry, essays, satires, and novels and produced work of almost every genre in order to bring about a new style of American literature. Paulding also wrote in collaboration with Irving. ;
