Biography
James Monroe (1758 - 1831), fifth American President, is best known for the Monroe Doctrine (1823), in which he stated that the European interference of any kind in the Western Hemisphere would not be tolerated by the United States. He was the last Revolutionary War general to serve as President. He served in the army and as a senator and the Governor of Virginia. He also served as the secretary of state under Madison, and died at the age of 74. ;
