Spyri, Johanna

Johanna Spyri, a Swiss author, wrote children's books, the best known of which is Heidi (1872), an immediate and enduring success.  Spyri had a remarkable ability to understand and portray children's thoughts and feelings.  Her husband and only child died in 1884, and thereafter continued to write and pursued charitable causes. ;

The most famous among Swedish authors, Johanna Spyri wrote mostly for juvenile readers. Her characters belong to her surroundings and are drawn with intricate details. Her works were equally appreciated by adults and children.;
