Cleland, John

English novelist and the author of Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748-1749). This work is also known as Fanny Hill, and is regarded as one of the most famous novels of the 18th century. Cleland's other novels include Memoirs of a Coxcomb or The History of Sir William Delamere (1751), and The Surprises of Love (1764). He also wrote several plays and three philological works. ;
