Joshua Slocum (1844 - 1909?) was a Canadian - born American adventurer and writer. He is best - known for his personal account of his solo voyage around the world, Sailing Alone around the World (1900). He sailed almost 46,000 miles and returned to Newport, Rhode Island in 1898, where he narrated the story of his experiences. Slocum then left for another adventurous voyage to the West Indies in 1909 and never returned. Slocum was declared dead in 1924.
