Sterne, Laurence


    Laurence Sterne (1713 - 1768), an Irish - born English novelist, satirist, and Anglican clergyman, was born in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland. He was educated atJesus College Cambridge and becamea priest in 1738. He is known for his masterpiece The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman,one of the greatest comic novels written in English. His other novel,A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1768), was almost equally famous.
