Maria Edgeworth (1767 - 1849) was an Anglo - Irish novelist. She was born in Oxfordshire but later managed her father's estate in Ireland, where she mixed with the Irish gentry. One reviewer,Robert Hall said, "I should class her books as among the most irreligious I have ever read . . . she does not attack religion, nor inveigh against it, but makes it appear unnecessary by exhibiting perfect virtue without it.
English novelist, best known for her creative illustrations of Irish life in her works. Edgeworth's writing style is notable for its vitality, humour, clarity and speaks of her innate talent. Her first novel Castle Rackrent was an instant and huge success.
