Robert Tressell was the pen name of Robert Noonan, Irish author of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (1910). In 1888, he moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where he worked as a decorator. He was a life - long socialist. An abridged version of his book was published by his daughter Kathleen, who had rescued it from the flames, after Tressell's death; the complete work was not published until 1955. It has been called the most influential English working - class novel.
Robert Noonan who wrote under the pen-name of Robert Tressel worked in different fields such as designing and decorating. He wrote different articles on current issues of the time. Later in his years of unemployment, he resumed his career as a writer.
