    Smiles, Samuel

    Biography

    Samuel Smiles (1812 - 1904), Scottish author and reformer, was born in Haddington. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University. As a journalist, he contributed articles tothe Edinburgh Weekly Chronicle and the Leeds Times. He also campaigned for parliamentary and factory reform. After leaving Leeds Times, he became secretary to the Leeds and Thirsk Railway. His works on hard work and self help are well known and includeSelf - Help (1859) and Lives of the Engineers (1861). ;
