Bacon, Francis


    Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626), English philosopher, statesman, and essayist,was born atYork House inLondon. The fifth son of Nicholas Bacon, he was left penniless at the death of his father. He pursued studies in law and entered the House of Commons, but his career advanced only after King James I ascended the throne. Baconopposed Aristotelian and Scholastic schools of thought and instead presented his own empirical philosophy.
