American author, popular for his novels of the great outdoors. White spent the early years of his life among miners and lumberjacks. It left a great impact on his mind and provided him with rich resource material for his stories. His works include The Claim Jumpers (1901), The Rules of the Game (1910), The Long Rifle (1932), and Stampede (1942).White's historical trilogy, The Story of California (1927), consists of Gold (1913), the Gray Dawn (1915) and The Rose Dawn (1920). He also wrote a few books for children and the autobiographical Dog Days (1930), and Speaking for Myself (1943).
