    Biography

    British historian, statesman, essayist, poet and biographer. Macaulay's most eminent work is History of England (1849-1861). It is spread over 5 volumes and is a record of the period from 1688 to 1702. It is notable for its brilliant style, minute details and vivacious presentation.
    The first two volumes of this extensive work were published in 1849 and were a stunning success. They sold 3000 copies within just ten days. The next two volumes appeared in 1855 while the last was published posthumously in 1861. His diverse writings include poetry, the most popular of which is Lays of Ancient Rome (1842). His essays are collected in Critical and Historical Essays (1843). He was made a baron in 1857.
