Biography
American reformer and writer, chiefly noted for his novel The Jungle (1906). He educated at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University. Aas a Socialist Party candidate for political office, he remained unsuccessful however, his potent censure of abuses in American economic and social life ameliorated a number of reforms. He helped establish the American Civil Liberties Union. He wrote some 90 books, most of his works concerning social and political reforms and studies advocating proscription and criticizing the newspaper industry.;
