English novelist and playwright Anthony Hope (Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, 1863 - 1933)was born in Clapton, where his father, the Reverend Edward Connerford Hawkins, was headmaster of St John's Foundational School. Hope acquired his earlier education at his father's school and later went on to Balliol College at Oxford University. Hope's most famous works areThe Prisoner of Zenda and its sequel, Rupert of Hentzau,set in the simultaneous fictional country of Ruritania. ;
