    Charles Dudley Warner (1829 - 1900), an American novelist, critic, and essayist, of Puritan ancestry, was born in Plainfield, Massachusetts. He studied law at Hamilton College and practiced in Chicago. Warner served as assistant editor, editor, and co - editor at various literary magazines. He participated actively in causes for the public good, such as prison reforms and park supervision. Warner was the first president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. ;
