Biography
Herman Melville's early novels were popular and successful, but his reputation declined rapidly. Â His work was rediscovered in the 1920s, however, and he is now considered to be one of the most important of American authors. Â He worked as a surveyor, a school teacher, and a whaler before settling in Massachusetts to concentrate on his writing. Later, after moving to New York City, he worked as a customs inspector while continuing to write and publishing mostly poetry. ;
