    Biography

    James Madison (1751 - 1836), fourth President of the United States (1809 - 1817) and the father of the U. S. Constitution, was born in Port Conway, Virginia. Madison was elected President in 1808 and, during his administration, trade with Britain and France was banned. Madison asked Congress to declare war against Great Britain in 1812. Although the nation was not ready to go to war, General Andrew Jackson's triumph at New Orleans brought about American success. ;
