    Biography

    American author and jurist. Grant is popular for his short stories and novels. He was Harvard's first Ph. D. in English and became a judge in 1893. His first literary triumph was An Average Man (1883). Grant is chiefly known for his short stories. The most famous of these are Against His Judgement, The Law-Breakers, and A Surrender. He also wrote novels which include Face to Face (1886), The Orchid (1905), The High Priestess (1915), and The Dark Horse (1931). Grant wrote poetry and essays as well. His autobiography, Fourscore, was published in 1934. ;
