    Thomas De Quincey (1785 - 1859) was anEnglish novelist, essayist, and critic best known for Confessions of an English Opium - Eater (1821). His writings are distinguished because of his innovative and poetic prose. De Quincey wrote essays on diverse subjects including economics, psychology, history, and metaphysics. He served as editor of the Westmorland Gazette and also wrote for various journals. His most popular critical work is On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth, published in 1832. ;
