Biography
Eighteenth president of the United States, an army general and author of the widely-read Personal Memoirs (2 vols. 1885-1886). It is a significant piece of writing, especially renowned in military circles. Grant's distinguished army career was filled with victories and honours. He was appointed the commander-in-chief of the Union Army in 1864. He was its greatest general, and in the American Civil War led his soldiers to victory. Grant was elected the president of America in 1869 and was re-elected in 1872. ;
