    Hippocrates,

    Biography

    One of the greatest physician of antiquity, Hippocrates is regarded as the father of medicine. He based his medical practice on his observations and on the study of human body. He monitored the effect of food, of occupation, and especially of climate as a cause of disease. He believed that illness had a physical and logical explanation. He rejected the views of his time that illness is caused by superstition and by possession of evil spirits and disfavor of the gods. His name is associated with the Hippocratic Oath, though he is not the author of the document. His wisdom, sense of detachment, and the ability to make direct, clinical observations probably influenced the other authors and had much to do with freeing ancient medicine from superstition. His works include: Aphorisms, instruments of Reduction, On Ancient Medicine, On Hemorrhoids, On the Sacred Disease, On Ulcers, The Book on Prognostics. ;
