Flaubert, Gustave

    Flaubert is best remembered as the author of Madame Bovary, which caused both him and his publisher to be charged with immorality by the French government when it was first published.  He achieved perfection in his work because of his relentless pursuit of the precise word or turn of phrase he needed.  It is said that he would sometimes spend a week on a single page, and his writing is thought to be more exact and precise than that of any other French author. ;
