Biography
Isabella Lucy Bird (1831 - 1904) was an English writer born in Boroughbridge. She wrote a number of popular books about her travels. Bird was the first female fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. A great humanitarian, she also founded several hospitals in Korea and China. Her most famous writings include English Woman in America (1856), The Hawaiian Archipelago (1875), A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains (1879), andJourneys in Persia and Kurdistan (1891).
