    Biography

    John Dryden (1631 - 1700), English poet, literary critic, and playwright, was such an influential literary figure that his era came to be known as the Age of Dryden. Heroic Stanzas, which he wrote as an elegy for Cromwell, was his first important work. He became the Poet Laureate in 1670 and wrote several poems of national sentiments. He excelled in satiric verse and continued to use that verse form for his plays and other works as well. ;
