Locke, John

English philosopher, and the first person to expound the theory of empiricism in a methodical manner. Locke firmly believed that experience is the key to knowledge. He negated the likelihood of intuition leading to information and understanding. His most celebrated work on this topic is An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690).
Locke wrote on a variety of subjects including philosophy, religion, education, politics and economics. His major works are Two Treatises of Government (1690); Some Considerations of the Consequences of the Lowering of Interest, and Raising the Value of Money (1692); Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1693); and The Reasonableness of Christianity (1695).
