British novelist, essayist, and critic, George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Blair. Animal Farm is his best- selling novel. Burmese Days (1934) is based on his years with the Imperial Police in Burma. Orwell was an independent-minded socialist, notable for the simplicity of his style and his journalistic or documentary approach to fiction. His other important works are: Shooting an Elephant (1950), Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), Homage to Catalonia (1938).;
